Hi Dr Cannell,
Just listened to the radio programme on vit D. You said you can only get vitamin K2 from organ meat which isn’t true. Most fermented products contain a good supply of K2. Cheese for example is a good source. If you want a low fat cheese with plenty of K2, cottage cheese is perfect.

K2 is represented by MK-4 in tables 1, 2 and 3.
As I understand, there is great variance in K-2 in meat, dairy products and organ meats, but that organ meats are the best source (though we don’t have great data on the specific amounts for a wide variety of organ meats).
As far as I am aware MK7 is the most beneficial for of vitamin K2 not MK4. Dont take my word for it ,have a look on Dr Mercola’s web site he has an interview with one of the top vitamin K researchs in the world.

For me as a Paleo dieter, I always like to ask the question , which type of micro nutrient did our ancestors consume? In this instance, the answer is MK-4, which comes from animals. MK-7 comes from Natto, a soybean fermented with a bacterium. Asian ancestors have been consuming MK-7 for only 100-600 generations, while all ancestors have been consuming MK-4 for over 2 million years.
Obviously this doesn’t answer the question, which is more beneficial? But until thorough research is conducted, I always like to give the paleo-nutrient precedence and benefit of the doubt.

One glaring thing mentioned:
“The investigators found that MK-4 strongly activates transcription of two specific genes in osteoblast cells. Osteoblasts are cells that create bone tissue. The genes are GDF15 and STC2 and they’re involved in bone and cartilage formation. They tested K1 and MK-7, and in contrast to MK-4, they did not activate transcription of the genes in the slightest. This shows that MK-4 has effects on gene expression in bone tissue that MK-7 doesn’t have.”
