Are scientists who offer poor public advice and cause mass deaths culpable?
A trial begins this week in Italy where six leading Italian scientists and one government official are being charged with manslaughter in connection to public advice regarding the likelihood of a major earthquake in 2009 in L’Aquila, a town 55 miles northeast of Rome. The trial begs the question: do we hold the government equally liable for their unwillingness to make better vitamin D recommendations and potentially save lives? Continue reading
Reduced risk of cancer in vitamin D and calcium supplementation
To date, there are only three randomized controlled trials (RCT) on whether vitamin D plays a role in preventing cancer. One of the three RCTs was previously thought to show no benefit in supplementing with vitamin D and calcium, until a recent reanalysis of the data. The reanalysis shows that in fact vitamin D and calcium can possibly reduce the risk of cancer. Continue reading
